This is a beautiful glass bowl from the contemporary collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY. Because they are on the inside of the closest side of the bowl, you can't see the images of ladders in the glass, but you can see their shadows.

Glass makes both beautiful and colorful shadows.

Last week, after attending a Mark Twain conference in Elmira, NY, I stopped at the Corning Museum of Glass on my way home. The museum houses a vast collection of historical glass which I have seen many times, but I especially like the ever-changing exhibits of contemporary works by glass artists from around the world. You will probably be seeing many of the works from the museum over the next few months because glass casts such unique and beautiful shadows.

        Glass artist Dale Chihuly's spectacular glass art was perfect for an exhibit at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh.  Chihuly chose a rustic old rowboat to display his giant hand-blown glass balls in a pond originally created to exhibit water plants in one room of the giant greenhouse-like structure.

STRIPES

        Glass artist, Dale Chihuly, created an enormous exhibit of hand-blown glass to fill every part of the huge Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh during the Spring of 2007.  I love Chihuly's work so much that I took my first outing after knee surgery to his show, hobbling from room to room on a cane.  This photograph shows tall red hand-blown "stripes" against the striped pattern of the greenhouse glass. Each of these pieces is about 4 to 6 feet in height.
